Spode Christmas Tree
The Christmas Tree pattern was introduced in 1938 as a dinnerware pattern
for the U.S. market. The original designer, Harold Holdway, drew the
first design without ever seeing a Christmas Tree before, so he had
to be inventive. This explains why there is a Santa on top of the tree
rather than a fairy or angel.
The first year the dinnerware was launched was a huge success, and the
first year versions can be identified because the back of the plate
says "Wishing You a Merry Christmas 1938." The phrase was
discontinued after that year.
The Spode Christmas Tree pattern has gone through several variations
and you can learn more about those changes here.
The success of the Spode Christmas Tree pattern has inspired other to
copy the design, however none have proven to be as Spode's Christmas
Tree pattrern which remains the original.
